Flora & Fauna
watercolor & gouache on paper, oil on wood panel & acrylic latex on canvas, 2021 - present
It’s a collection of shapes and colors! An enduring theme in my painting process is finding a balance between realism and using the attributes of the medium to simplify and abstract. My home garden is my biggest joy and inspiration. Its evolution with time and the changing seasons reflects so many parallels in our own lives - loss and new growth, struggling, adapting and thriving. In my times spent here, the wind on my face, the sunlight on the leaves that cast strong vivid shadows on a sunny day or the vibrancy of the colors against a gray cloudy sky, flood me with existential thoughts and remind me what a small speck we are in this universe, one of many but one of a kind all the same.
